A Gentler, Kinder Pigtown Perspective

Making lemonade...

It's 2014, and I'm still in Pigtown--and 8 years here at that. The neighborhood is getting better and better--thanks to great activist neighbors, changes in perspective, and community improvement--there's so much to discuss. I'll be posting full swing by spring 2014. Stay tuned.

Hi! I just came across your blog and was hoping I could talk with you more about Pigtown! I am considering moving to the area, and am wondering what it is like now as compared to when you last posted a few years ago. I really love how honest your posts are and am looking for someone to be honest now. I typically here that its awful or that it is great, which leads me to belive that lots of people are very biased!! haha

Thank you so much!

Hi Sarah! Thanks for dropping by my blog--it has been years! You must be doing a great deal of research to have found it. I'm here to answer any questions (still here in Pigtown). If you're on Facebook, add me at Celina Inman (Baltimore).

In short, Pigtown is still transitional and high crime but there are some genuine and wonderful residents here and an active community for a lot of positive development. It has a serious drug problem which fuels all other crimes (thefts, shootings (always between rival dealers/criminals--not between other residents--not that that is great), and trash).

On the surface it seems like a tough neighborhood but it is very diverse in all socioeconomic categories. It is the best neighborhood in the city for commuting and it's close to all things downtown (and although it's the most troubled of the south Baltimore neighborhoods, it's the most affordable). I am a woman who has lived alone on and off for 10 years and I haven't been in any situations except for someone stealing my scooter and plants. Certain blocks are better than others and I'll tell you more if you're curious.
